Such an interesting point — I’ve always been really interested in the social/political aspects of makeup. There’s this older line of thinking that women wear makeup to impress men or to make themselves more beautiful, and then there’s the more modern take which is that women (and all people) can experiment with makeup as a form of creative expression for themselves. There’s definitely a trope of the woman who has been wronged or is for some reason unloveable who simply decides to “give up” on trying to impress a man but they ways in which to do this are not so much liberation as they are untying one’s self from the patriarchy/beauty standards
