Imagine stepping into the tub and the water begins to speckle your feet. Slowly as the water falls down your arms, belly, thighs, and calves, you notice the near blistering sensation of the freezing water. Maybe you let out a little wail or an entire scream, or you burst into ridiculous laughter. You shake your body and allow the cold water to fall all around you as you breathe deeply and wait for the minute to pass. So, why on earth would anyone want to take a cold shower to start their day? Well —

1. It Reduces Anxiety and Depression

In the early days of last summer, I had an ever-growing sense of impending doom — otherwise known as anxiety. Having never experienced this sort of anxiousness, I was at a complete loss when I would wake up shaking or have to scream in the car to let off the tension building in my body. One day, desperate for relief, I saw some TikTok that said to eat ice cubes if you’re feeling anxious. I made a b-line for the freezer and shoved a couple of cubes in my mouth.

Fast forward and I have found myself jumping into a cold shower every morning. I didn’t plan for this but after the first few showers, I noticed the complete euphoria that I experienced upon stepping out onto the bathmat. As it turns out, I had not imagined this…
