A Guide to Building a More Focused Organization

During the Summer 2020 protests calling for racial justice, millions of people went out and bought books to educate themselves on racism and how to actively be anti-racist. Somehow it has been surprising to some people to understand the nature of systemic racism and to move beyond the belief that racism occurs in isolated incidents between people.

Understanding the dynamic role race places in our lives is critical to building anti-racism into our larger organizational structures. Creating an organizational culture for your company or foundation means addressing race within your strategy, hiring practices, and policies. Research is increasingly reminding us that empathy, care, and vulnerability are critical to strong leadership and to caring work environments.

Now, we must begin with the acknowledgment that racism occurs at various levels — personal, interpersonal, institutional, and structural. Building a Race Equity Culture means creating an organizational culture focused on the counteraction of race inequities, both internally and externally.
